THE FOODS WE EAT

The foods we eat are materials which the body requires to work effectively; and the nature of the food eaten will, to a great extent, determine how efficient the body machine is.

However, food materials do not circulate in the body until they have undergone several biological processes. For example, during the digestive process, the food materials are broken down into soluble compounds which will be absorbed into the blood stream through the intestine lining. After digestion and absorption, the food nutrients undergo some biochemical processes in the circulatory system. These processes will initiate the conversion of absorbed nutrients into building blocks for cells and tissues of the body.

Besides body chemicals like enzymes, hormones are also manufactured through this medium. Basically, nutrients and food materials are also referred to as food substances. Food substances are categorized into two- namely: Primary food substances and welfare food substances. Primary food substances are from nature and they supply the necessary building blocks. Examples are carbohydrates, proteins and fat. Welfare food substances assist the primary food substances in relation to maintaining the body. Examples are minerals and vitamins.

However, so many factors are associated with the food we eat. When we starve unnecessarily by eating less than normal, bodily requirement, we become malnourished because the body mechanism is denied the appropriate nutrients. On the other hand, unusual appetite for food can make one become obese, and that of course can expose one to blood and heart related diseases.

GOOD AND ILL HEALTH

Food contributes to a large extent the health status of the body. If food is taken rightly, it would always be beneficial to human body. Let’s look at some chronic diseases and the effect of food on the diseases.

ARTHRITIS AND RHEUMATISM

Rheumatism is a disorder which is more common among elderly people. When it becomes severe, it is referred to as arthritis. Cold and wetness increase the pains. Rheumatism attacks the joints in the leg, hands and hip. When it starts on the big toe, it is called gout.

Waste materials and excess acids (acidosis) in the body are causes of this disease. The liver, kidneys and bladders are responsible of throwing such materials and acids off the body. Excess acid hinders the production of what feeds the adrenal glands known as cortisone. This then hinders the proper metabolism of protein in the body. It is therefore imperative that an arthritis patient must stop eating very high protein food (meat) and waste producing foods such as white flour products.

In treating arthritis, avoid over-processed foods (that had lost their vitamins and contain chemicals), tea, coffee, cane sugar products, biscuits, white floor products, meat, pork, liquor and high acid foods.

Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, the grains and plantain. Potatoes (Irish potatoes) are particularly good; they are high in calcium, magnesium and vitamin D which help to absorb acid.

ASTHMA

This is a disorder of the respiratory system and goes to hinder normal inhalation and exhalation of air in and out of the lungs. Asthmatics suffer breathing difficulty which usually aggravates during periodic attacks.

Waste matter and mucus in the system causes asthma. It is not unusual to find asthmatic patient have difficulties with their kidneys, stomachs, bowels and intestine. When all these, or some of them are not functioning properly, elimination of waste matter from the body is found defective. Eating of foods that are difficult to digest can bring about attack, especially if eaten late in the evening.

Sufferers should abstain from cigarette smoking and excessive intake of liquor. Honey should be used generously, because it contains the vitamins required such as vitamins A, B, B12, F and Pantothenic acid.

DIABETES

One of the known causes of diabetes is the devitalized foods that we eat, although it can result from physical degeneration due to failure of some part of the digestive system to function properly especially the pancreas which produces insulin required to convert glucose or sucrose into simpler sugar.

Diabetes is of two types-

Diabetes mellitus which is a condition when starchy foods turn into sugar in the body and nature tries to rid the body of excess sugar.

Diabetes insipidu – in this case, the kidneys and nerves are said to be in a bad condition. A lot of urine is produced which is caused by a deficiency of the pituitary gland.

Diabetes affects the kidneys. Drinks such as unhealthy soft drinks, tea, coffee and liquor should be avoided. Also, sweets and biscuits should be avoided.

Eat plenty of natural foods, avoid over processed foods. Eat fruits, honey and carrot juice.
